Abbott has won the CE Mark in the European Union for its next-generation FreeStyle Libre 3 continuous glucose monitoring system.

Officials at Abbott boast that the Libre 3 technology includes a super small, thin sensor. It’s the size of two U.S. pennies stacked together and able to accurately provide real-time glucose readings over 14 days of wear — with data delivered directly to smartphones every minute.

A person using the sensor can easily apply it on the back of the upper arm with a one-piece applicator, according to Abbott. The system means no more for fingersticks to view glucose levels.

“People living with diabetes are at the center of our design process, and we made our next-generation technology even more discreet for a better user experience to make managing diabetes as easy and seamless as possible,” said Jared Watkin, SVP of Diabetes Care at Abbott.

Abbott is pricing the FreeStyle Libre 3 at the same level as previous generations of the device.

“Since we launched the first disposable glucose sensor in 2014, we’ve always believed all people with diabetes should have access to high-quality, accurate and affordable diabetes technologies,” Watkin said in a news release. “That’s why Abbott disrupted the traditional notion that CGMs have to sacrifice quality or accuracy for affordability, and we built our FreeStyle Libre family of products to deliver unparalleled results at a lower cost than any other CGM available.”

The news out of Europe comes about three months after the FreeStyle Libre 2 received FDA clearance in the U.S.
